Accountability for Water (AfW) is a collaborative Research and Action initiative funded by William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The programme seeks to strengthen accountability, promote good governance and improve service delivery in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector in Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Liberia and Zimbabwe. AfW supports collaborative knowledge generation, documentation and dissemination that is geared towards influencing context-specific and dynamic policies that are at per with the complex and diverse social, economic, cultural and political landscape that characterises much of the African continent. AfW is hinged on catalysing and accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 6 on sustainable water and sanitation for all.
To fully harness the potential of stronger accountability we: (1) Engage and train a network of Professional Research fellows who are based within the major water delivery governance institutions across our target countries; (2) Hold regular awareness and dissemination workshops with key policy makers in the water sector; and (3) Create a data hub for water policy cultures in Sub-Saharan Africa.
